GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Provides direct services, individually and as a
member of a team in response to emergencies and provide prehospital advanced life support care to victims of injury or illness. A Paramedic is often the highest medical authority at an emergency medical scene and as such, makes medical decisions based on standing orders, protocols and orders from medical control. Performs responsible protective service work providing fire suppression and rescue services support functions.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision of the
Lieutenants.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position.
· Comply with all policies, practices and procedures of the Lakeville Fire Department. Subject to the approval of the EMS Director, administer skilled medical care to individuals in response to calls for emergency treatment. Examine, assess, and stabilize patients at emergency scenes, i.e., hemorrhage control, treatment for shock, immobilization of fractures, bandaging, proper treatment for burns, poisoning or drug overdose, delivery of newborns, manage mentally disturbed patients, etc.
· Obtain medical history, check vital signs; advise/inform Medical Control at the hospital of diagnostic indications. Perform definitive life support; administer treatment and utilize advanced life support equipment and procedures as directed by an authorized physician and State treatment protocols, i.e., endotracheal intubations, defibrillation, synchronized cardioversion, nasogastric intubations, closed chest decompression, intravenous administration of drugs and fluids, external trans-thoracic cardiac pacing, and interpret 12 lead EKG’s, etc.
· Respond to a wide range of emergency situations as required. Control scene of medical emergency; conduct triage, treatment, and transportation at mass casualty incidents. Document pre-hospital care received by patients to facilitate admission to health care facility. Prepare patients for transport; monitor patients in ambulance to maintain patient stability, administer additional treatment when necessary. Operate ambulances and other emergency vehicles as needed, to and from scenes of emergency.
· Receive and record emergency call information as needed.
· Occasionally perform public health education as assigned.
· Relay relevant patient information to other medical personnel enroute to and upon arrival at appropriate medical facility.
· Perform medical documentation and reporting accurately and completely.
· Perform maintenance on EMS apparatus, equipment and department facilities as needed.
· Maintain supplies and equipment inventories as needed.
· Clean and sanitize equipment as needed.
· Perform other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
· Thorough knowledge of rules and regulations governing the operation of the Lakeville Fire Department.
· Thorough knowledge of State Department of Public Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services treatment protocols.
· Sound knowledge of Paramedicine / ACLS
· Expert knowledge of ACLS
· Ability to establish and maintain an excellent and effective professional working relationship with supervisors, co-workers, medical personnel, patients, other agencies, and members of the public.
· Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work cooperatively and productively in a team atmosphere, demonstrating initiative and drive.
· Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
· Ability to react quickly and remain calm under duress and strain.
· Knowledge as to the operation of all fire apparatus, ambulance and rescue equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· High school diploma or equivalent
· Maintain valid motor vehicle driver’s license
· Valid Massachusetts or National Registry EMT-Paramedic certification
· Maintain valid ACLS card
· Maintain valid CPR card
· Maintain Medical Director authorization to practice as an EMT-Paramedic

While performing the duties of this job, the Paramedic is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The position is occasionally sedentary. The Paramedic sits, walks, or stands for varying periods, may exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally including having to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects up to 100lbs. While performing the duties of the job, the incumbent is constantly required to sit, talk, and hear, must be able to listen and accurately record information from employees, executive staff members, other agencies, and members of the public. Vision should be at or correctable to normal ranges. Ability to operate a keyboard and sit at a computer for long periods of time; ability to operate general equipment and all other related equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work requires a high degree of individual tolerance to combinations of extremely unpleasant elements or constant conflicting urgent time and attention demands of the utmost priority. The nature of the physical environment may be such that the employee's personal well-being and/or safety may be compromised.
This position is a non-exempt position as regarding federal and state minimum wage and overtime requirements and, therefore, is eligible to be paid at the rate of time and one half (i.e., one and one-half times) the regular rate of pay for all hours worked beyond forty hours in a
