Working alongside our full-time fire and emergency medical services (EMS) personnel, the Paid On-Call Firefighter duties will include but not be limited to:
- Perform firefighting and life rescue duties, including responding to various emergencies; conducting fire suppression functions; administering first aid and emergency medical treatment; operating equipment; laying hose, raising and climbing ladders, etc.; conducting search and rescue operations; and responding to hazardous materials spills.
- Participate in training programs by attending classes, participating in drills, simulations etc., studying City geography and participating in voluntary physical training and conditioning programs.
- Assist with maintenance and minor repairs of fire station, grounds and equipment; perform safety checks and inspections on various pieces of equipment; may change oil, filters, fluids, etc., on vehicles and apparatus; maintain supply inventory and make requests for purchases; perform general housekeeping functions within and around stations.
- Participate in fire safety and prevention programs, including making presentations/teaching classes to the general public.
- May be assigned additional duties related to the Training and Education Program in the department, such as the development of lesson plans and presenting the material to department personnel.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Candidates for Paid On-Call Firefighter must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Legally authorized to work in the United States
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
- 18-35 years of age (36-40 years of age is accepted for applicants that are already certified BOF (FFII) or higher through the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal
- Live within a 10-mile radius of Geneva within one year of employment. Interested candidates can view our residency map on the City's website.
Once hired as a Paid On-Call Firefighter, all employees will attend rigorous training at a local Fire Academy and hands-on training with the members of the Geneva Fire Department training division.
The base hourly rate of pay for this position is $15.91 per hour, for Orientation and Basic Operations Firefighter (BOF) Academy.
After successful completion of the Basic Operations Firefighter (BOF) Academy and Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) certification, the hourly rate of pay for this position increases to $18.83 per hour.
After successful completion of the 1-year probationary period, additional pay can be added for certifications, such as EMT-B or Paramedic, Fire Apparatus Engineer, Common Passenger Vehicle Rescue, Advanced Technician Firefighter, Hazardous Materials Technician, Rope Operations, or Instructor 1 and 2.
