About the Position: Serve as a Supervisory Firefighter (Hazardous Materials Technician) for the Directorate of Emergency Services at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. For Internal Candidates: I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service which includes 1) Engaging in hazardous containment for assigned organization; 2) Responding to incidents when firefighting support is needed such as: fire suppression operations, hazardous materials emergencies, aircraft emergencies, aircraft rescue and/or medical operations; 3) Assisting staff with policies related to firefighting.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).

For External Candidates: I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-10 grade level in the Federal service which includes 1) Engaging in hazardous containment for assigned organization; 2) Responding to incidents when firefighting support is needed such as: fire suppression operations, hazardous materials emergencies, aircraft emergencies, aircraft rescue and/or medical operations; 3) Assisting staff with policies related to firefighting.

In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess:

Fire Officer III, Fire Inspector II, Fire Instructor II, HAZMAT Incident Commander and Airport Firefighter certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M. (NOTE: You must include copies of the certifications with your application package.)

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
