Position Type: This full-time non-exempt union position averages 42 hours per week, following a schedule of 24 hours on, 48 hours off, 24 hours on, and 96 hours off.

Salary: Starting pay for Basic EMTs is $30.27 per hour, with higher rates available for Advanced EMTs and Paramedics based on certification level. In addition, pay increases are available for longevity within the department. We also offer educational stipends for Associate, Bachelor's, and Master’s degrees, regardless of whether they relate to fire or emergency services.

Job Description: A Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) serves as a dual-role member of the department, with responsibilities in emergency medical care in addition to firefighting duties.

Key Responsibilities:

As a member of a platoon, a Firefighter's duties include but are not limited to:

Responding to fire alarms and emergency calls by deploying and connecting hose lines, operating nozzles, climbing ladders, applying chemical extinguishers, and using a variety of firefighting tools and equipment to control and extinguish fires.

Drive and operate fire apparatus and equipment as assigned.
Conducting routine maintenance tasks on firefighting apparatus and equipment.
Conduct fire prevention activities by conducting building inspections, identifying and mitigating fire hazards, and educating the public on fire safety practices, as assigned.
Carry out related tasks as required or assigned.

In addition to firefighting responsibilities, a Firefighter/EMT:

Administers basic and advanced life support to sick, injured, or individuals at emergency scenes or during transport to medical facilities.
Provides emergency medical care, including hemorrhage control, automated external defibrillation, CPR, airway management, and fracture stabilization.
Records essential incident information, patient condition, treatments, vital signs, and scene observations.
Complete patient care reports clearly, concisely, and objectively.
Follows established Maine EMS protocols.
Relays patient information to physicians both via radio transmission and direct contact.
Maintains daily medication logs and equipment supplies inventories.
Operates emergency vehicles during responses and patient transportation to hospitals.

Necessary Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

Proficiency in operating all apparatus and equipment, including firefighting techniques, rescue operations, and emergency medical care.
Competence in administering approved emergency medical care in accordance with Maine EMS Protocols.
Familiarity with fire department standard operating guidelines, department policies, regulations.
Knowledge of equipment maintenance.
Understanding of building construction, related codes, electrical power codes, hydraulics, and the identification of hazardous occupancies within the municipality.
Mechanical aptitude.
Knowledge of water systems and water mains.
Physical agility and strength to perform demanding work in adverse conditions.
Ability to remain calm and act swiftly under pressure.
Proficiency in comprehending and following oral and written instructions.
Skill in operating firefighting and rescue equipment, including motor vehicles.
A willingness to participate in community initiatives throughout the municipality.
Ability to operate with other agencies during a multi-jurisdictional response.
Completion of a standard senior high school or technical school program, or an equivalent combination of training and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the job efficiently.
Maine-Certified or Pro-Board Firefighter 1 & II (NFPA 1001 qualifications)
Maine-Licensed EMT, EMT-A, or EMT-P (EMT-P preferred)
1. ALS Providers must have ACLS, PALS, and PIFT
AHA CPR
EVOC, or equivalent
Maine Driver’s License, or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire.

Supervision Received:

This position reports to the designated Shift Officer.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver heavy equipment and patients.
Ability to perform strenuous physical activities in various weather conditions.
Must pass a physical agility test and medical exam.
Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
